Creating the guest list can be one of the most stressful and daunting tasks of planning a wedding. There’s so much to consider! The budget, the venue you have in mind, and even the style you have chosen for your wedding can all have a major influence on who makes it to the guest list.
On top of it all, it is quite important to consider the etiquette as well. While wedding rules are not as strict as they used to be, there are still some you must follow, and when it comes to the guest list, we have gathered some of the essential guidelines you should keep in mind.
· Treat all the family groups equally. This means that if you want to invite one aunt, you should make sure to invite all of them. Truly, the last thing you want in the days following your wedding is your aunties bombarding you and being upset with you, and much less for them to know that one of them got invited to the wedding, while the others didn’t.
· It’s OK not to maintain the same equality on both sides of the aisle. This means that while your family may not be that tightly knit, his may be – so it’s OK if you don’t invite second cousins while he invites all of them. In this case, there’s an explanation you can give to your relatives, so things should be OK. Keep in mind though: both you and your fiancé should agree on this beforehand!
· It’s OK not to invite children. In the end, this is your wedding day and if you feel that kids aren’t appropriate for the kind of event you want to plan, you have the right not to invite them. The delicate way to do is by adding only Mr. and Mrs. to the RSVPs, not leaving room for “and family”. The more straightforward way is by calling all of the guests who might bring children (or who specified this in the RSVP) and explaining them that this will be an adult-only event.
