Wedding Etiquette Mistakes That Should Be Avoided

Wedding etiquette can be really confusing, especially given that so much has changed in recent years. Under these circumstances, knowing which rules must be followed and which rules can be left aside may sometimes feel like an endless maze.

What are some wedding etiquette mistakes many couples make – but you should definitely avoid?  We have some tips for you – read on and find out more if you want to make sure you don’t offend anyone at your wedding.

  • Not putting the right start time on your wedding We know you want to make sure everyone’s there for your big entrance, but asking guests to come way earlier than they’re supposed to can come across as arrogance. Generally, if you put down a certain time for the start of the wedding ceremony, your guests will know they have to be there a bit earlier – so don’t just assume they will be late.
  • You are not completely clear on who’s invited and who’s not. You may not want your guests to bring plus-ones. Or you may not want them to bring their children to the wedding. That’s fine, but you should make sure this is very clear per your wording on the wedding invitations (or, more specifically, the RSVPs). Instead of leaving the lines empty, clearly put down the names of the person(s) invited on each RSVPs (e.g. “Mr. John Smith” instead of just an empty line the guest can fill in with his/her name(s) and that of their entire family).  Doing this will help avoid awkward situations on your end, as well as on your guests’ end – so be thoughtful when wording the invitations.
  • You choose to not greet each guest individually. OK, receiving lines are passé, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take a few minutes of your time and stop by each table to meet and greet every guest. It’s just common courtesy to do this, especially since they have taken the time to come to your wedding (and some of them have even traveled a long way for this!).  Many of your guests will spend a good amount of money to attend your wedding.  A proper greeting is a MUST!
