WEDDING TIPS: CHANGING YOUR NAME

Updated: Feb 13, 2020

Changing your name can be one of the more time-consuming parts of getting married once your wedding day is over. You may not want to change your name, but if you do what are some of the most important considerations and how much does it actually cost to do this?

We have some tips for you – so read on and find out more.

· Like it or not, changing your name involves a certain level of preparing and planning. Even more, it also means that you will have to make sure you allocate time on your schedule after the wedding to actually go through the entire process (which, no matter how smooth it may be, is still a bureaucratic process through which you need to go step by step). Be patient and prep ahead to minimize the time investment.

· Request at least 2-3 certified copies of your marriage certificate. You will need these additional certified copies for the paperwork following the wedding, as evidence of your marriage, in order to complete your name change.

· Keep in mind that different states have different laws when it comes to changing the names (and this may or may not include different laws for using your maiden name as a middle name as well). Also, keep in mind that you’ll want to follow the right order when updating your name (your name for Social Security should be changed first, followed by the State Department for your passport, and then the IRS for tax purposes).

· How much does it cost to change the name? It depends a lot on your location and the specific paperwork you want to change. In general, you should expect to pay around $20-$35 for a driver’s license name changes, $75 for a US passport renewal, and no fee for a new social security card. However, check with the appropriate state offices in your area to confirm as each state is different, and fees can change over time.
