· Foods that melt. Ice cream comes as a natural here, but if you can serve it from an ice cream truck or if you can ensure it will stay cool throughout the reception, it can be a good idea. Also, buttercream frosted wedding cakes are very tasty and they can look absolutely gorgeous – but they are not very suitable for outdoor summer weddings so if that’s what you have your heart set on, it might be better for everyone if you skipped the idea.
· Foods that smell. Don’t get us wrong, we love a slice of Sacre Bleu as much as the next person. But a cheese tower, outside, in the hot temperatures of July or August, can be a real health hazard (not to mention it will fill the air with a less than pleasant smell). Furthermore, other smelly foods should be avoided as well (including, but not limited to deviled eggs and seafood).
· Foods based on mayo. Potato salads may be delicious and nothing works with those late-night fried chicken treats you have in mind than a good coleslaw salad. However, mayonnaise has a very bad rap in high temperatures – and no matter how delicious everything-bathed-in-mayo may be, these foods can very quickly go bad. The last thing you want is for your guests to get sick!
· You might think soda is the best option for non-alcoholic beverages at your summer wedding. But all that sugar can very quickly become an insect-magnet. Plus, there are other, much better and classier alternatives to plain old-school soda – such as fruit water or fancy non-alcoholic cocktails (we bet everyone will enjoy either of these options!).
